Men's Health magazine subscription holders may be interested to learn that the publication has chosen ultramarathon runner William Sichel as its Everyman of the Month.

The 56-year-old Orkney Island resident has been competing in the sport for more than 15 years, winning his first ever 100km, 72-hour, six-day and seven-day races.

He holds the world record for the most miles run by an over 55 in six days and has achieved much in his career as a runner, despite having to overcome testicular cancer in 1997.

Sichel hopes to beat his own record for distance run in a single event when he competes at the 1,000 Mile World Cup in Greece later this year.

In July 2008 he ran of 532.56 miles in six days, but intends to smash that figure at the Athens event this March by running at least 50 miles a day for 16 days, with breaks of no longer than three hours.

Ultramarathons are any race longer than a traditional marathon and can range from 40 miles to week-long events.

His exploits bear a resemblance to those of Lance Armstrong - the cyclist who overcame cancer to go on and win the Tour de France a record seven times.
