John Terry not guilty of racist abuse

Footballer John Terry has been found not guilty of racist abuse towards Anton Ferdinand.

John Terry has been in the headlines a lot over the past few years - and not usually in favourable circumstances, as those of you with a Match of the Day magazine subscription will already know. Last year he was caught having an affair with Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge's girlfriend and this year he has been accused of racial abuse.

The footballer has been in court this week after he was accused of swearing at QPR player Anton Ferdinand and calling him "black" in a derogatory way during a match earlier this year, after the pair had begun trading insults. The footballer was caught on camera mouthing the words, but he claimed he was simply repeating back what he thought Ferdinand had accused him of saying.

Due to the uncertainty of the circumstances in which the words were said, the court had no choice but to give a verdict of not guilty, particularly as team-mate Ashley Cole had backed Terry's claims.

After the trial Terry's legal team said, "The court has today acquitted John Terry of all charges. He did not racially abuse Anton Ferdinand, and the court has accepted this."

Now that that's over, perhaps we can now get back to what's really important - the beautiful game!
