Michael Schumacher decided to return to Formula One with Mercedes GP PETRONAS for the upcoming Formula One season because he retired too early in 2006, according to Sir Jackie Stewart.

Subscribers to the F1 Racing Magazine will be able to hear reasons given by a number of former drivers as to why they believe the seven-time world champion is returning to the cockpit this year.

Rubens Barrichello, who partnered Schumacher for five years at Ferrari, Niki Lauda and Stewart were among those to attempt to offer some insight into the decision.

Stewart, who picked up 27 victories during his Formula One career, stated that he felt Schumacher still had the desire to race at the highest level when he retired, which was something he has failed to overcome.

He told the publication: "He retired too early. He never got racing out of his system, which is why he went and rode motorbikes. He wouldn't have done that if he'd been ready to retire at the end of 2006."

Schumacher is joined in the Mercedes GP PETRONAS driver line-up by Nico Rosberg for the 2010 season, with the campaign beginning at the Bahrain Grand Prix in March.
