Country Life’s Dos and Don’ts of being a gentleman

Country Life give their 'Gentlemanly Commandments' for modern-day men to live by.

If you have a Country Life magazine subscription then you may have learnt in this week’s issue what exactly it means to be a modern-day gentleman.

To mark the launch of the Gentleman of the Year Awards the magazine have compiled a list of ‘Dos and Don’ts’, named ‘Country Life’s Gentlemanly Commandments’.

The magazine consulted the likes of Jeremy Paxman, Richard E. Grant, Jilly Cooper and Joan Collins before devising the final list.

If you’re a male cat-owner who loves a glass of Malibu before spending the evening on Twitter, you’re in big trouble… Check the list for yourself:

A gentleman...

  • -Is at ease in any situations and puts others at their ease
  • -Is always on time
  • -Dresses to suit the occasion
  • -Makes love on his elbows
  • -Occasionally gets drunk, but never disorderly
  • -Is mindful of others' financial circumstances


A gentleman does not...

  • -Wear a pre-tied bow tie
  • -Drink Malibu
  • -Buy fuchsia trousers
  • -Tweet
  • -Put products in his hair
  • -Wear Lycra
  • -Write with a ballpoint
  • -Plant gladioli
  • -Own a cat
