Chris O’Dowd is the cover star of GQ’s Comedy Issue

GQ fronts GQ's annual Comedy Issue, discussing working with comediennes and why he's glad his parents divorced.

The April issue of GQ should have you in stitches this month, seeing as it’s the comedy special. On the cover is British-comedy-actor-turned-American-movie-star Chris O’Dowd – whose face is being licked by Jessica Hart.

In the interview, GQ point out that a lot of the best comedies he’s appeared in have been written by women. “Yeah, you can always tell it’s a women’s writing,” he says, “because it goes on and on and on. No, I’m joking! But without being too blunt about it, it’s simply that the female characters are believable. I mean, some of the s**t that’s out there! It’s extraordinary!”

He adds: “I think I’m good working with really funny women and letting them nail it, like with Lena or Kristen or whoever. Sometimes when you watch comedians act it feels like if they don’t have the next gag, they’re not really listening.”

He gives funny anecdotes of his childhood in Ireland and actually credits his parents’ divorce for picking up his talent for comedy. “All I remember is just deathly silence, and I think that’s when I started to use comedy. It was definitely a catalyst to something. To, I guess, where I am now. So, er, I guess I’m really happy they broke up!”

You can read the full interview in the April issue of GQ, as well as features on the likes of Russell Kane, Monty Python, John Bishop and Wes Anderson.
