Was volcano a blessing for mankind?

A Huck magazine columnist has suggested that the chaos caused by the recent Icelandic volcanic eruption could have encouraged people to see life differently.

Title: Huck

Huck magazine columnist Tim Conibear has examined the effect that last week's volcanic ash cloud had on humanity in northern Europe and asked whether it could have been a blessing in disguise.

He explained how he noticed that trapped people, unable to fly due to the possibility of damage to jet engines, began to take life easy again for a few days.

Taking away the ability, and therefore the need, to rush around and complete all the usual tasks allowed people to stop and become more aware of their surroundings.

Mr Conibear described how he spent the week in Stockholm, Sweden, taking in the city in a way that he normally wouldn't have been able to do.

Describing the people he met and the things he did, the columnist suggested that mankind could have done with the cloud lasting a little longer.

"It felt as though for a little while the world woke up from the deepest of slumbers, and we opened our eyes to the skies and our hearts to one and other," he wrote, adding that for a short time, people opened up to the wonders of the world and felt good again.

The flight ban came into place after a volcano under the Icelandic glacier of Eyjafjallajokull erupted, spewing ash into the atmosphere, which spread across Europe.
