Wanderlust's endangered sites list

Wanderlust magazine has published its annual list of destinations that are under threat.

Category: Wanderlust magazine subscription

Wanderlust magazine subscription holders reading the February edition of the publication may notice it includes a list of Threatened Wonders.

Each year, the magazine publishes a list of attractions and destinations that are under threat, many of which are from over exploitation and poor management.

Included in the article is Peru's Machu Picchu, which is a favourite excursion of many travellers in South America.

A popular way of reaching the hill-top ruins is by completing the four-day Inca Trail, which is usually booked through Cuzco-based firms.

However, the ancient Incan site is listed along with India's Jaisalmer and Timbuktu as being endangered.

Tourism Sustainability Council executive director Erika Harms explained that poor management is responsible for many popular sites being put at risk.

"[Travellers should] be mindful of the resources that you use and how that impacts the local population and do what you would do in your own home, manage your waste and the use of water and energy in the same way or better," she advised.
