Wallpaper’s limited edition cover by Bjarne Melgaard

Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard designs limited edition December cover for Wallpaper.

If you’re a big fan of artist Bjarne Melgaard, then make sure you check out the December issue of Wallpaper, which features a profile on the artist. Those of you with a subscription will have just received his limited edition cover designed exclusively for the magazine, featuring the Pink Panther and Britt Ekland.

The artists’ work was recently described by The New York Times’ Roberta Smith as a “furious, scenery-chewing conflagration of the political, the sexual and the formal” and although he uses various mediums in his work, speaking to Wallpaper he said that he considers himself to be a painter.

“I don’t think it’s such a difference if I make a movie or a painting. I think it’s still rooted around form and colour and composition,” he said.

The Norwegian was born in Australia but now resides in New York – so he’s done a fair amount of travel. Despite studying painting at the Jan van Eyck Academie and the Rijksakademie in The Netherlands, he decided to drop out. “I quit and left for Australia. I was a beach bum. I started making work and one of my former professors asked me to put on a show in Copenhagen.”

Melgaard is now on his latest show, A New Novel, which opened at Luxembourg & Dayan in New York on 9th November.
