The Word host Amanda de Cadenet talks to Red

Former The Word hose Amanda de Cadenet speaks to Red about her difficult past and why fame wasn't good for her.

If you were a fan of The Word back in the ‘90s, then no doubt you will remember Amanda de Cadenet who is Red magazine’s May cover star.

Despite having just turned 40, de Cadenet looks just as youthful as ever in the photo shoot and she seems to be content with her lot in life. Though, when she was younger it was a different story.

“I had a rough patch around the age of 15,” she tells the magazine. “I drank too much. My experimentation was excessive. I was a workaholic, I had food issues, and I had body issues. I was in a lot of pain. My parents didn’t recognise what was going on. When I was at boarding school, I would get a multi-pack of Wispas, melt them with a hairdryer and eat them in one go. I was so lonely.”

However, now the television presenter is happily married Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi and is working on a new show called The Conversation. She prefers to look forward rather than backwards and doesn’t concentrate on fame.

“I never think about my life 20 years ago. I got sick of being famous. It is not a desirable ‘job’. Young girls want to be famous now. That’s disturbing. There should be a handbook. It does a number on your head.”
