Sydney beaches as Bondi tide turns red

Beaches around Sydney closed after the ocean turned red due to a form of algae.

Holidaymakers in Sydney had a bit of a shock today as the tide of Bondi Beach and surrounding beaches had turned red. A form of red algae had flourished and formed a group, causing large sections of the ocean to appear red.

Many beaches were closed after concerns for health, however, some holidaymakers still braved the seas. Whilst there are no toxic effects from the algae, it can cause some skin irritation and the fish population is expected to dwindle.

The beaches are now back open, but the red sea certainly raised a few eyebrows for holidaymakers, with some joking that they thought “the red sea was in Asia, not Australia”.

If you want to go to Australia – preferably when there isn’t red algae clouding the tide – the order a free Cox and Kings Australia brochure today.
