Strengthen abs without back pain

Men's Health magazine has given readers tips on how to work their abs without the backache.

The summer is often the time when guys seek to tone up their abs to help them look better on the beach.

Men's Health magazine may have just the thing for wannabe surfer boys who hope to have a six-pack without putting strain on their back.

The publication noted that back pain is all too often a common complaint among those who are training their abdominals.

However, it highlighted three exercises identified in a study by experts Craig Axler and Professor Stuart McGill as ones which do a lot for your stomach without causing pain along the spine.

Published in the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise journal, the research suggested that the hanging straight-leg raise could be ideal for the task.

Executed by hanging by your arms from a chin-up bar and lifting the legs until they are perpendicular to the torso, the exercise should work the core, while also being kind to the back.

Meanwhile, the magazine recently identified 75-year-old ultramarathon runner Jack Dennes as its man of the month.
