Sarah Parish on being an older actress

Sarah Parish chats to Good Housekeeping about ageing as an actress and trying to juggle her career and motherhood.

Sarah Parish has made quite a name for herself after appearing in TV dramas such as Hearts and Bones, Cutting It and Monroe and has even been in Hollywood films such as The Holiday.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping in this month’s July issue, she tells them how at 45 years old, she now feels that her choice of roles as an older woman are increasingly shrinking. She hates the industry’s bias towards young characters and casual drug use.

“I want to see people who are my age, people who have a bit of wisdom and weight behind them,” she tells the magazine. “I don’t want to watch skinny 16-year-olds running about, smoking pot! Stop trying to youth everything up. That’s my little rant...”

Despite not having succumbed to the surgeon’s knife yet, she isn’t completely opposed to the idea. “I have seen some horrors!” she says. “But never say never. If they come out with something miraculous, that doesn’t involve cutting your face off and can make you look 10 years younger, then, of course.”

As well as an actress, Parish is also a wife and mother, and much like many other women in her position, tries to keep the right work/family balance in her life. “You do constantly feel guilty as a woman – everything is a compromise,” she says. “We get home after working hard and we feel so guilty for not being there that we work even harder at home!”
