Rocket Man Sir Elton giving up songwriting?

Sir Elton John has told GQ magazine subscription holders he won't be writing any more pop songs again.

If you're a fan of Sir Elton John and you've got a GQ magazine subscription, you might be disappointed to read that he's quitting songwriting.

Frequently hailed as one of the best songwriters of his generation, Sir Elton has admitted he doesn't feel he can compete with up and coming stars like Lady Gaga.

He told GQ magazine: "I'm at that stage where I don't think I can write pop music any more. I can't sit down and do a proper rock song. It was okay when I was 25 or 26, but not any more.

"I like to do my little side projects like Scissor Sisters and have fun, but I don't think Elton John will be putting any pop singles out."

"Look, I'm 63, I don't want to be on VH1 or MTV. I'm not going to compete with JLS or Lady Gaga," he added.

Sir Elton, who an avid campaigner against Aids, was knighted by the Queen in 1997.

He is estimated to have sold more than 250 million albums during the whole of his career.
