Lonely Planet magazine subscription holders may be interested to hear that the publication's Tom Hall has suggested that Middle Eastern destinations are set to become more popular.

According to the editor, such nations offer a mix of history, adventure and hospitality that is attractive to western travellers.

He explained that Tel Aviv in Israel and Damascus in Syria are likely to welcome even more visitors in the coming years, with the latter offering a similar "buzz" to that of Morocco's Marrakech.

The "incredible history" and "fantastic warm welcome" of Damascus - the world's oldest continuously inhabited city - make it an attractive proposition, Mr Hall added.

"We have seen people going to Turkey and Egypt more and more and once people have had a taste of Middle Eastern culture they tend to want to do more," he said.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian city of Jericho in the Jordan Valley recently revealed that around one third of the 24,000 visitors to 116 of its tourism sites last week were from international destinations.
