Man visits all 201 countries without using a plane!

Graham Hughes has travelled to all 201 countries around the world in just under four years, without ever flying on a plane!

If you’re afraid of flying but love to travel – so much so that you have a Conde Nast Traveller magazine subscription – then here’s a story for you!

Graham Hughes from Liverpool has travelled to all 201 countries in the world, without ever boarding a plane.

He left the UK on New Year’s Day in 2009 and has used boats, buses, taxis, trains and his own two feet to travel over 160,000 miles. He arrived at his final destination Juba, in South yesterday – 1,426 days after he set off. His budget was just $100 a week.

Hughes has plenty of interesting stories to tell, as you would imagine, which include being arrested for trying to “sneak into” and “being rescued from Muslim fundamentalists by a Filipino ladyboy called Jenn”. “I love travel, and I guess my reason for doing it was I wanted to see if this could be done, by one person traveling on a shoestring,” he said to a newspaper. “I think I also wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact is full of people who want to help you even if you are a stranger.”

The expedition was all filmed for a documentary, Guinness have confirmed that he has achieved a world record and he’s raised money for WaterAid – so not a bad almost four years!

“The main feeling today is just one of intense gratitude to every person around the world who helped me get here, by giving me a lift, letting me stay on their couch, or pointing me in the right direction,” Hughes added.
