James McAvoy on being a geek and working audiences

James McAvoy speaks to Esquire about his new film, his challenging role and his nerdiness.

He’s come a long way since he first popped up on our television screens in Shameless, nowadays James McAvoy is better known as a bit Hollywood player.

Speaking to Esquire in their April issue, the actor talks about his latest film Welcome To The Punch, which is released on Friday. “Don’t get me wrong,” he says. “I love British cinema, but there’s also a place for ostentatious, balls-out entertainment.”

Unlike his usual roles playing the sweet, love interest he plays a bit of a rebel. However, he believes that the audience will still like him. “Big year, really, for me, in terms of getting to play somebody that challenges the audience more than I have done in the past. As an actor, you’ve got to try and make the audience like you, even if you’re doing bad things. I quite like that dynamic.”

Despite having audiences eating out of the palm of his hands (us included) he also claims to have a geeky side, but not to extremes. He says: “I am a nerd but I don’t dive head-first into any fiefdom of nerdiness, except for maybe Star Trek.”
