Isla Fisher on weight gain, Home & Away and being a working mum

Isla Fisher reminisces about Home & Away in Easy Living's June issue, as well as talking Gatsby, babies and her body.

It’s almost as though every magazine features a member of The Great Gatsby cast on their cover this month and this time it’s Isla Fisher’s turn in Easy Living’s June issue.

The Australian actress is married to funnyman and at the time of filming she had recently had a baby, so the fact that she had to put on 10lbs for her role as Myrtle Wilson wasn’t too challenging for her.

'She says: ”I was breastfeeding, so I had a little flesh of my own, I am proud to admit, but I also gained 10lb, just by following my natural instincts.” And what were her natural instincts, you may ask? “Cupcakes!”

But before she was a Hollywood actress or anyone’s wife, she was better known as Home & Away’s Shannon. “I feel so sentimental about that time,” she says. “Although I can barely remember any of it – the storylines were so fast and so ludicrous. One week you had anorexia, the next you were lesbian, the next week you were an incest?victim – and you were in a bikini on the beach and in the coffee shop, and in a bikini at a funeral.”

Despite getting great roles, she says that acting will never be her priority. She explains: “I definitely feel my career comes second to my family. After I had my first daughter, I took three years off; I took a year and a half off after my second. My mother worked when I was growing up, so I was under the impression I’d find it easy to be a working mum. But I found it very hard to be away from my family, even for short periods of time.”
