GQ magazine has reflected on the life of Polish president Lech Kaczynski following his recent death.

The politician's plane went down on a recent visit to a Polish war memorial in Russia, killing him and almost 90 others.

First elected in 2005, Kaczynski and his Law and Justice party managed to help shape the Polish financial system into the only European economy not to enter recession during 2009.

The nation's gross domestic product expanded by 1.9 per cent, while more entrenched systems in the UK, Germany and France all suffered.

Furthermore, the nation's employment figures now look more rosy than a number of other European nations - a reflection of the efforts of the late Mr Kaczynski, GQ suggested.

The president's plane crashed en route to the Russian city of Smolensk, where a delegation was attending a memorial to the thousands of Polish soldiers killed by Russian forces in the Second World War.

Among the dead were families of the victims and a number of prominent Polish political figures.

It is not the first tragedy to occur in Russia this year - a large number of commuters were killed in a recent suicide bomber attack on a metro station.
