Clare Balding has been highly praised for her coverage of both the Olympics and the Paralympics this summer and the sports presenter has been thrust into the spotlight, so it’s no surprise that she’s not doing magazine covers.

Balding has recently been named number four in the Pink List of influential gay people within the UK. She has been out since she was in her 20s and in 2006 she entered into a civil partnership with Radio 4 announcer Alice Arnold.
“It’s interesting,” she says in the interview. “I feel a lot of responsibility in being a proactive, very happy, very confident example of a lesbian.”
But she’s keen to point out that it does not define who she is, adding: “I am many things, but one of the things I am is a lesbian.”
She is keen to make lesbians feel more secure in the sporting world. She says: “The next important thing that I should be able to do for lesbians is to make sport a very comfortable world in which lesbians can be out and not suffer financially, or not think they are going to suffer financially, because I think that’s the reason a lot of them don’t come out.
“They think it’ll affect their sponsorship. A part of me is deeply saddened that any individual could still think that; and a part of me is deeply saddened that they might be right. That is the next big step.”
