Angelina Jolie has admitted today that she has recently undergone surgery to remove both breasts after it was revealed that she was likely to develop breast cancer.
Jolie carries the faulty gene BRCA1, which gives her an 87% risk of developing breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer.
Writing a piece for The New York Times, the actress says that having watched her mother go through a great deal of suffering from the disease before she passed away, she doesn’t want the same fate for her children, so decided to make the brave decision to remove the tissues that are likely to turn malignant and reduce her chances of developing breast cancer to just 5%.
