The latest edition of Grow Your Own magazine has advice for people looking to grow their own fruit and vegetables but who are lacking in experience.
February's issue sees Joe Hashman list 14 pointers for new allotment owners, with clearing the plot recommended as the best place to start.
According to Mr Hashman, the best way to go about this is to use a rake to drag weeds and turf backwards before using a fork to dig up the exposed roots.
He suggests that instant results should not be expected but that the process will ultimately prove rewarding and worthwhile.
Other tips include making sure seed packets are read carefully, rotating crops and intercropping to make the best use of space.
The importance of understanding soil-type is also emphasised, with some plants more suited to growing in certain types of ground than others.
Meanwhile, Gardeners' World contributor Chris Beardshaw reports on how best to grow Brussels sprouts.
