Find out how to ready your garden for spring

People with an Amateur Gardening magazine subscription can find out how to get their garden ready for spring.

If you've got an Amateur Gardening magazine subscription, you can find out how to ready your garden for spring.

Now is the perfect time to get going on all those "niggling jobs that you have put off all winter", said Kris Collins, editor of Amateur Gardening magazine.

He said gardeners should start sorting their sheds, clearing paths, pulling weeds and treating soil.

"March is when everything kicks off for gardeners; it is probably the busiest month in the gardening season, so ahead of that it is a good idea to just get yourself set up," Mr Collins explained.

Before people start their planting, the Amateur Gardening magazine editor said gardeners should treat soil with an organic fertiliser.

"Organic fertilisers need a period of time to break down in the soil and start working, so if you do that now once you are planting come the tail end of March the nutrients are quickly available to the plants, he explained.

Recently, the Royal Horticultural Society said February is a crucial month in the gardening calendar as it is when the garden begins to come back to life again after the cold winter.
