Taylor Swift defends her songs about ex-boyfriends

Taylor Swift talks to ELLE USA about why she writes songs about her past boyfriends.

Taylor Swift’s love life has had more ups and downs that a yoyo, but if anything it’s actually helped rather than hindered her – after all, Swift has become infamous for penning songs about her ex-boyfriends and failed relationships.

Take her last two songs – We’re Never Ever Getting Back Together and I Knew You Were Trouble (which kind of pre-empted Harry Styles) – both have been huge hits and have definitely been aimed at past flings.

Speaking to ELLE USA, it seems Swifty doesn’t get what big deal is. “To me it’s just writing songs the way I always have,” she says. “It’s me sitting on my bed feeling pain I didn’t understand, writing a song, and understanding it better. If people want to dissect the lyrics, that’s their right, but it’s all coming from the exact same place as where I started. It’s just something I do to feel better.”

It’s kind of like a pop star’s version of a diary we suppose. She’s also keen to dispel the rumours that she’s a desperate man-chaser. She says: “I’m sure if I looked up the latest Google Alerts rumor it would say I’m chasing somebody who doesn’t like me as much as I like him – people love that angle on me. They’re like ‘Oh Taylor, coming on too strong again, chasing boys. I never chase boys. They don’t like it!’”
