Rihanna invites Glamour home to Barbados

Rihanna - aka Robyn Fenty - talks hard knocks, being fearless and her ultimate style icon with Glamour.

It’s well known that Rihanna was once just a girl from Barbados named Robyn – long before she became her alter ego and took the music world by storm. Glamour caught up with the star while she was chilling out on her native island, and asked their burning questions.

She confesses that when she’s back home she feels much more carefree, despite not having had an easy time at school being teased about her lighter skin colour and body shape. “I’m not victimised – I’m grateful,” she says. “I think those experiences were strategically put together by God for the preparation of being in the music industry. It’s so easy for me to deal with the bulls**t now.”

When it comes to ignoring the “haters”, she says that she’s had to learn to go back to her old self. “I had to regain my fearlessness because it did go away for a bit. My mother said something to me a few years ago: ‘I’ve seen something in your eyes I’ve never seen before: fear.’ She was like, ‘No, this is not you.’ I just got back to being OK with myself.”

RiRi’s ultimate style icon may take you by surprise… “You know who is the best who ever did it?” she asks Glamour. “Princess Diana. She was like, she killed it. Every look was right. She was gangsta with her clothes. She had these crazy hats. She got oversized jackets. I loved everything she wore.” Read the full interview in the January issue of Glamour.
