Katie Holmes talks to ELLE about raising Suri

Katie Holmes talks to ELLE about Suri's generation, Dawson's Creek and how she developed her style.

Eight years ago Katie Holmes went from being a relatively well-known TV actress with a hit series behind her, to being half of the world’s most famous couple – and the mother of the world’s most famous child to boot.

She seems to have learned to handle things pretty well over the years and since splitting from Tom Cruise in 2012, her life has seemed a little less hectic.

Speaking to ELLE in the April issue of the magazine Holmes clearly worries about her daughter Suri growing up in this new social media-savvy world, even before adding the press attention the seven-year-old receives.

“Children are exposed to so much more than we were, I suppose every generation goes through that feeling, 'Oh my God, it's so different from how I grew up,'” she tells ELLE. "I think the basics are very important: the number one thing is making sure my child feels loved. And good about herself. And that what she does and who she is, is special and important, and should be celebrated. And my mum always said, 'No-one loves you like your mother.’”

Looking back at Dawson’s Creek – and knowing how popular it still is with fans today – she says she believes the reason it was so popular was because of its innocence. "The world has changed so much since then. Social media, and what people are watching. But I think innocence was one of the draws of the show,” she says. "It was these kids going through first love and heartbreak and growing up and friendships changing. So I'm glad that the innocence still holds up."

She’s been applauded for her great sense of style over the years and Holmes puts it down to learning a lot about fashion and beauty as a child. “I was pretty lucky… I’m the youngest of five with three older sisters, so when I was a little girl, I spent a lot of the time in the bathroom just watching them,” she says. “I was intrigued by make-up and my mum was very frank with us and said, ‘There are natural beauties in the world, but make-up enhances.’’’
