A study of 924 Norwegian schoolchildren found overweight pupils often consumed healthier meals than their slimmer peers.
Normal-weight children tended to eat more junk food, compared to the brown bread, fruit and fish-rich diets of overweight youngsters.
According to Zest magazine, "this is another warning of the importance of exercise in order to maintain a healthy weight".
Jon Stratford, Zest magazine's fitness expert, said: "A balance of three areas is needed in order to stay healthy - nutrition, exercise and sleep. It's simple: if these aren't in balance, then you'll put on weight."
Recently, statistics from Diabetes UK revealed nearly one in ten adults in the country are now registered obese.
Around one in 20 suffer from diabetes, which, in the type 2 case, is strongly affected by weight and diet.
