Emma Watson tells W about her Bling Ring character

Emma Watson is all grown up in her latest film role. She talks to W about playing the teen thief.

Watson has well and truly left Harry Potter character Hermione Granger behind her as she undertakes her latest role in The Bling Ring, based on the real life story of a teenage gang who robbed many inhabitants of Hollywood.

Playing a young thief doesn’t come especially natural to the actress. Her adolescence was spent in front of cameras, but even before that she admits she wasn’t too wild.

“I’ve always been a very serious child,” she says. “I remember being 13 and girls in my class saying ‘So-and-so is going to kiss so-and-so on the school fields.’ I said, ‘That’s stupid. They’re too young for it to matter—he doesn’t even love her, and that’s just a waste of time.’ It’s amazing that I had any friends!”

She adds: “I’ve never wanted to grow up too fast: I wanted to wear a sportsbra until I was 22! The allure of being sexy never really held any excitement for me. I’ve never been in a terrible rush to be seen as a woman.”

She’s really had to step outside of her comfort zone to play Nicki in The Bling Ring. “Nicki is so different from me,” she says. “How do I try and understand a young woman who loves these things so much that she is prepared to commit crimes to have them?”
