Ellie Goulding talks confidence, love and music with Cosmo

Ellie Goulding on self-confidence, writing songs about her love life and her celebrity friends.

We’re not sure Ellie Goulding could get much bigger – she’s taken the music world by storm, modeled in Marks & Spencer’s winter campaign and now she’s on the cover of one of the country best-selling magazines – Cosmopolitan.

Despite now being one of the hottest musicians around, Ellie admits that she hasn’t always felt great about herself. “I went through a time of being quite insecure,” Ellie tells the magazine. “I’d convinced myself I was fat; I didn’t like my figure and I had a big nose. Now I’ve finally got to a place where I don’t focus on those things. I feel like I’m not changing for anyone; I’m doing it all for myself. Because there’s no one else to do it for.”

Like many of her peers, she uses her own life – particularly her love life – as inspiration for her music. “I wrote Anything Can Happen because I’d been in a relationship with Greg for two years, who I absolutely adored and still do,” she says.. “Then that ended very unexpectedly and it threw me off. I didn’t expect another relationship for a long time after that. Then all of a sudden I met this other person [dubstep producer Skrillex], and it was crazy – it came from nowhere.”

She’s got quite a few celebrity friends these days and includes Cara Delevingne, Rita Ora and Taylor Swift among them. Whist her musical style couldn’t be more different to Swift’s her writing style is definitely comparable – and it’s a running joke between the friends.

“Me and Taylor are similar in that we write about relationships, and we joke about that,” she tells Cosmo. “We text and sometimes I only have to say one thing, and even if it’s cryptic she gets it. She’s an inspiration to me because she reinstated how honest you can be about a boy in your music.”
