Avril Lavigne first burst into our lives 10 years ago as a tie-wearing, eye-liner-wearing rock chick singer songs about Skater Boys. Since then she’s been married and divorces, had plenty of hits and is now engaged to Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger – yet she doesn’t seem to have aged a day.
Speaking to Nylon in the June/July issue she talks about her new album and how it’s a little braver than her previous music.
“Lyrically, I pushed myself to talk about different subjects I haven’t talked about before,” she tells Nylon. “I didn’t want to be so simple. I tried to really express myself and go deeper.”
This more grown-up take may be something to do with Kroeger who is older than Lavigne. When asked about him she says: “He’s nice, and real, and kind. For me, it’s about having a connection on a deeper level. Be romantic!”
There’s definitely nothing fake about the singer, either. She explains: “I’m so transparent. If I’m not being myself, I won’t do well, and that goes for writing songs, work, relationships, everything. And if I’m not happy, people are going to know that.”
