Trace the history of boxing on the big screen in Sight & Sound magazine

Sight & Sound magazine subscription holders can read about the history of boxing in films.

Film buffs who have a Sight & Sound magazine subscription will be able to find out all about the history of boxing in the movies.

With The Fighter one of the acclaimed films of the year so far, Kim Newman, writing for Sight & Sound magazine, has found out a bit more about the sport and its use in the cinematic realm.

"The Fighter may be an ordinary biopic, but as a boxing movie it's unusual - for the simple reason that, broadly, it's in favour of the sport," Newman finds.

Christian Bale and Amy Adams are both nominated for Oscars for their roles in the popular flick, which has also received a nomination for Best Motion Picture of the Year.

Sight & Sound magazine also has an exclusive interview with the film's director David O Russell, stepping into the ring to trash out the challenges the flick posed.

As well as this, there is a review of the retrospective of films which will be aired at the BFI on South Bank and a commentary by David Thomson about the sombre Anne and Muriel in Sight & Sound magazine.
