The Oscars 2012 – the winners, the gossip and the dresses!

Yesterday saw Hollywood's biggest event of the year - The Oscars - take over tinseltown. Get the lowdown on the winners, the losers, the gossip and the dresses.

This morning we woke up to a whole lot of Oscars buzz. Of course, everyone – whether you are a film-buff with an Empire magazine subscription or can’t even remember the last time you went to the cinema – will know that the 84th Annual Academy Awards were held yesterday in Los Angeles.

After the BAFTAs were held a couple of weeks ago in London, we all had a good idea of who would win their categories, but you can never be too sure!

Meryl Streep won the Oscar for Best Actress for the third time, for her role in The Iron Lady as Margaret Thatcher and The Artist’s Jean Dujardin won the Oscar for Best Actor.

It was yet another awards ceremony where The Artist stole the show, as it also won the awards for Best Picture, Best Costume Design, Best Director and Best Original Score. Hugo was just as successful with awards for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the Oscars without some drama – and there was plenty of that when Sacha Baron Cohen, who had been banned from the awards after rumours he would pull a prank, turned up and did exactly that.

Luckily his ban had been revoked, but it still resulted in him being ejected. Poor Ryan Seacrest ended up being covered in what the actor’s new comedy character, The Dictator General Aladeem, claimed were the ashes of Kim Jong-Il.

And how can we do a round-up of the Oscars without mentioning the dresses? Our favourites were Michelle Williams’ red Louis Vuitton gown, Natalie Portman in Vintage Dior and Gwyneth Paltrow in a caped Tom Ford creation. One thing’s for sure though, we’ve seen enough of Angelina Jolie’s leg to last us a lifetime!
