Sopranos actor James Gandolfini has died aged 51

James Gandolfini has died of a heart attack aged just 51 years old.

It’s sad when anyone passes away, but especially someone who should still have so many years left. Today it was announced that Sopranos actor James Gandolfini has died aged 51 of a heart attack.

The actor had been on holiday in Rome when he passed away, where he was due to win an award at Taormina Film Festival.

Gandolfini was best known for his role as Tony Soprano in the hugely successful US series, Sopranos – as we’re sure those of you with an Entertainment Weekly magazine subscription will already know.

Family friend Michael Kobold made the announcement, saying: "James came here on vacation meeting his family. He had a wonderful day - he visited the Vatican, he had dinner at the hotel with his son, awaiting the arrival of his sister. We are all devastated by this loss. James was a devoted husband, a loving father of two children and a brother and cousin you could always count on."
