Mumford & Sons talk to Q about the class issue

Mumford & Sons catch up with Q in the September issue to discuss class, being a Christian band and Liam Gallagher.

Mumford & Sons are one of the best-selling UK bands of the past few years, but it seems that the boys don’t always get attention for the right reasons.

Speaking to Q in the September issue, they admit that they often get mocked for being too “posh”.

"Class is a big issue here [in England]. And some people get picked on more than others," Winston Marshall tells the magazine. "I think we probably do. I mean, it doesn't help that we wear waistcoats and tweed the whole time."

He adds: "There is a reverse snobbishness in England towards that sort of stuff. And I think that's one of the reasons we really enjoy America, 'cos we're classless."

The boys also admitted that they find it frustrated that they are often referred to as a “Christian band”.

"It's funny. Bands from Coldplay to Kings Of Leon... everyone uses these words and it's not preachy at all and it's not even religious, they're just musing," Ted Dwane says. "They're just exploring this massive thing that we're all aware of."

Marcus Mumford doesn’t like hearing criticism about the band. "I don't really want to hear it. Y'know, it's fine. We've never wanted everyone to like us. But we've never been exclusive and we've never shut the door on people. But yeah, I don't wanna hear it."

However, when told about Liam Gallagher's claim that they "look like f**king Amish people" and that they are "as rock and roll as blue rinse", Mumford laughed: "I f**king love him. The fact we're on his radar is awesome." Subscribe and save on a Q magazine subscription today.
