James Patterson is number one on Forbes authors list

Forbes release their rich lists and James Patterson comes out on top of the authors.

As anyone with a Writers News & Writing Magazine subscription will know, every author hopes that they will be a huge success.

Whether you are writing your debut novel or it’s your third, there’s always that fear that everyone from your agent and publishers to your loyal readers will hate it and you’ll always be known as a failure, but if you get it right, it could make you very rich.

Just ask James Patterson. The author recently topped the Forbes author list as having the highest income of all authors from May 2010 until April 2011. According to sales figures and input from literary agents and publishers, Patterson earned $84million dollars in the space of a year, which works out at approximately £50.4m.

This was significantly higher than any other author within the same time frame. Danielle Steel came second with earnings of $34m, Stephen King was third with $28m, Janey Evanovich fourth with $22m and fifth place was a tie between Twilight author Stephanie Meyer and Rick Riordan who wrote the Percy Jackson series, both earned $21m.

Notably absent from the list was Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who didn’t quite make the cut. Though with the last Harry Potter film having just been released and Pottermore on the way from October, we’re sure she’ll quickly get over any disappointment.

So those of you aspiring novelists out there, if you’re successful you may see your own name in this list and a Writers News & Writing Magazine subscription will help you on your way.
