Empire visits the latest Transformers film set

Empire catches up with Transformers: The Age of Extinction director Michael Bay and newbie Mark Wahlberg.

If you were a fan of the first three Transformers films, then we bet you’re excited for the latest installment, Transformers: The Age of Extinction. However, the film is nothing like the rest… and it has a whole new cast to boot.

Empire caught up with the franchise’s director Michael Bay and lead role Mark Wahlberg whilst filming in Detroit to get the skinny.

Of course, there’s plenty of green screen going on – understandle when making a film about giant robots – but Mark Wahlberg is old hat at pretending things that aren’t actually there, are.

“Ted was a good tool to prepare me for this,” he tells Empire. “Having to identify with things that aren’t there. The bear prepared me for that. And as embarrassing as doing things like that fight sequence with him were – throwing myself around a room for 12 hours while the crew just sat eating sandwiches and watching – it taught me how to do this shit.”

Having a big named actor (and former pop star) on set has its downsides though. Co-star Sophia Myles recalls an incident that disrupted filming. We were in the middle of a close-up on Mark, and there were these excitable students on this high-rise building overlooking the set. It was right in the middle of a really serious moment and they were shouting, ‘Marky Mark! Marky Mark!’ The one of them flashed her t**s.”
