Damon Albarn talks to Q about his drug use

Damon Albarn catches up with Q magazine to talk about his secret past.

Usually musicians who get clean after years of using hard drugs, such as heroin reflect back on the times as dark, however speaking to Q in the May issue Damon Albarn confesses that drug use wasn’t all bad…

"[Heroin] freed me up," he says. "I hate talking about this because of my daughter, my family. But, for me, it was incredibly creative... A combination of [heroin] and playing really simple, beautiful, repetitive shit in Africa changed me completely as a musician. I found a sense of rhythm. I somehow managed to break out of something with my voice."

Despite saying it helped his career, he is keen to emphasise that in now way does he condone or promote using class A drugs. "It's a cruel, cruel thing," he says. "[Heroin] does turn you into a very isolated person and ultimately anything that you are truly dependent on is not good."
