Anne Hathaway watched Emmerdale to get accent right for One Day movie

Anne Hathaway reaveals that Emmerdale helped her out in preparation for playing Emma in One Day.

One Day, the film that book-lovers all over the world have been waiting for has finally been released today.

When David Nicholls’ book One Day was released, it was a huge success with both critics and readers alike and once word spread, it became an international best-seller. The book tells the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, who spend the night of their graduation together on 15th July 1988. The story then follows their relationship on that date every year for 20 years. Genius.

The news that the book was being made into a film was met by mixed reviews, some couldn’t wait to see their favourite characters on the big screen, whilst others were worried that the book would be butchered by Hollywood, but as the script was written by David Nicholls himself this wasn’t too much of a concern.

However, when it was announced that Anne Hathaway was to play Emma, readers did not take kindly to it, despite assurances from David Nicholls and director Lone Scherfig that she was up to the job. How could a beautiful A-list Hollywood starlet with an American accent ever play Yorkshire girl Emma Morley, with her freckles and NHS glasses and pull it off?

Well, those of you with a Soaplife magazine subscription will be interested to hear that one of the ways Anne Hathaway prepared for the role was not only by talking to anybody from Yorkshire she could find, but also by watching Emmerdale to get the accent right. She told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: “Emmerdale's great. We don't have programmes like that in America so it was actually quite exotic for me.”

Whether Hathaway can win fans over remains to be seen, but at least she managed to get some soap-watching in.
