TIME on the Ukraine crisis

TIME look into what Putin's involvement in Ukraine could mean for the country - and the rest of the world.

We had a feeling we might already know what would be on the cover of this week’s issue of our TIME magazine subscription… Yes, we mean the situation in Ukraine. And we were right.

Of course, a lot can happen in a few days and since the magazine was posted out, and a lot has. This morning it has been revealed that Russia now have control of the Crimean peninsula, despite no shots having been fired and no treaties being signed.

Russian troops have surrounded two of Ukraine’s largest military bases, have blockaded naval bases and occupy the airports.

On February 23rd, US National Security Adviser Susan Rice issued a statement saying it “would be a grave mistake” if Putin were to get involved, and that it could in turn become a full-blown international crisis.

However, Carnegie Moscow Center director Dmetri Trenin tells TIME: “It is very much Putin’s preference to keep Ukraine together.”

Now that Putin has control over much of Crimea, it is likely that Obama may try to intervene. As it stands, Crimeans are terrified of what will happen next, but let’s hope it remains peaceful.
