TIME looks at Obama and Rouhani’s new relationship

TIME magazine takes a look at the new Obama/Rouhani dynamic and what it means for the US and Iran.

Despite not meeting at the UN gathering in New York in September, President Obama and President Rouhani have made steps towards their two nations finally getting along – by having a chat on the phone!

Whilst Obama had openly stated that he was hoping for a chance to talk to the Iranian leader, however Rouhani said there had not been enough time to prepare. “If we don’t take the first steps carefully, [we] won’t be able to meet our goals,” he said.

Since then, the two have talked via the telephone and via letters and the next formal talk between Iran, the US, Britain, Russia, France, Germany and China will take place in Geneva in October.

However, many are questioning Rouhani’s motives behind wanting to appear reconciliatory with the US. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah has described him as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” and Rouhani himself has even admitted to being deceptive in the past so that the country could advance their nuclear weapons.

The worry now is that Obama will let Iran get away with too much, though US officials say they won’t be fooled. “The acid test remains whether the Iranian government is prepared to take actions that constrain, limit and roll back its existing nuclear program in a manner that provides confidence it is peaceful in nature,” says an Obama Administration official.
