Why do monkeys wash with urine?

National Geographic magazine subscription holders can find out why monkeys wash with pee.

If you've got a National Geographic magazine subscription, you can read about why some male monkeys wash with their own urine.

A new study, reported in the publication, found monkeys use their own pee to attract the opposite sex.

They vigorous rub the fluid into their hands then put it in their fur, scientists found.

Kimberley Phillips from Trinity University, US, who carried out the study, said capuchin primates do this to send out sexual signals.

Phillips said: "Apparently, a male covered in urine is quite attractive," reports National Geographic magazine.

Female monkeys were exposed to urine previously collected from adult males for the study.

The researchers found the parts of brain associated with sexual behaviour and smell were activated by the urine, reports National Geographic magazine.

Other monkeys attract the opposite sex by something rather untoward, such as female baboons, who flash their bottoms at males they are attracted to!
