US parents 'back plans to test children for smoke exposure'

New Scientist magazine subscription holders can read about a proposed US initiative.

If you've got a New Scientist magazine subscription, you'll be able to read all about a proposed initiative in the US which has the backing of parents in the country.

American parents are in support of a scheme which would see their one and two-year-old children being tested for smoke exposure.

With recent studies by UK and Canadian researchers both revealing the effects passive smoking could have on unborn babies, parents appear to be keen to test their children.

Also in the latest edition of New Scientist magazine, there is a feature about the UK's water footprint and how food waste is exacerbating the situation in the country.

The new issue of the publication has a suggestion about ways to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere - by holding planes at boarding gates for longer.

According to New Scientist magazine, in a trial of this at Boston Logan International airport, fuel consumption fell when aircraft were stalled for an extra four minutes and 18 seconds.
