The jury is out on daylight saving

National Geographic magazine subscription holders can read about the pros and cons of daylight saving time.

If you've got a National Geographic magazine subscription, you can read all about the advantages and disadvantages of daylight saving time.

"For decades advocates of daylight savings have argued that, energy savings or no, daylight saving time boosts health by encouraging active lifestyles", which is something some experts are testing at the moment, reports the publication.

A study by environmental economist Hendrick Wolff, from the US University of Washington, has so far revealed that daylight saving time is beneficial for people's health.

He told National Geographic magazine there is less TV watching and more people take part in outdoor activities when the clocks change.

"That's remarkable, because of course the total amount of daylight in a given day is the same," he said.

However, Till Roennerberg, a chronologist from Munich, said the body clock never properly adjusts to an additional hour of sunlight a day.

"The consequence of that is that the majority of the population has drastically decreased productivity, decreased quality of life, increasing susceptibility to illness, and is just plain tired," he told National Geographic magazine.

In the UK, the Lighter Later campaign is trying to push forward the idea of moving clocks forward by one hour throughout the whole year.
