It has been discovered that a small island which has appeared on Google maps and marine charts named Sandy Island does not actually exist, those of you with a Focus magazine subscription may be interested to know!
Scientists from the University of Sydney decided to explore the area, which is between Australia and French-governed New Caledonia. However, there was no sign of land, only deep blue ocean.
Maria Seton from the University spoke to the AFP news agency on her return from the 25-day trip, saying: "We wanted to check it out because the navigation charts on board the ship showed a water depth of 1,400m in that area - very deep.”
"It's on Google Earth and other maps so we went to check and there was no island. We're really puzzled. It's quite bizarre,” she added. "How did it find its way onto the maps? We just don't know, but we plan to follow up and find out."
