National Geographic Society was formed by risk takers!

Find out exactly how the National Geographical Society formed 125 years ago in this month's issue of Nat Geo!

Put a whole load of risk takers in one room and what do you get? National Geographic it seems!

You’ll probably already know by now that this year marks the society’s 125th year in existence, but you may not know how it came about.

Back in January 1888 adventurer John Wesley Powell , who had done the unthinkable when trying to navigate the entire length of the Grand Canyon, decided that he needed like-minded people who were just as willing to take risks in the name of discovery.

Along with 32 other war veterans, engineers, naturalists, meteorologists and even a journalist, he formed the National Geographical Society. Their mission was “the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge”.

And now here we are! Of course, there’s a lot more to that story but we don’t want to give it all away before you read the June issue...
