Happy 14th Birthday Google!

Google turns 14 years old today! Can you remember a time before Google?

Can you imagine your life without Google? We certainly can’t! In fact, it’s likely that you’re reading this blog as a result of Google in some way or another. Technology has come a long way in the past 10 years, as those of you with a Wired magazine subscription will already know, but without Google we’d all be a little lost.

Today is Google’s 14th birthday and it’s hard to believe that the search engine has only been around for that long. How on earth did we find out the answers to questions that had been niggling away at us? Or figure out where we recognise that actor from? Or find that elusive limited edition book that can only be found in a small town in Japan? We didn’t.

Did you know that Google was originally called BackRub? Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University and created their search engine in 1996, luckily in 1997 they decided to change the name to Google – a play on the word “googol” which is a mathematical term. You learn something new every day.

So next time you Google something, just think about the fact that your favourite search engine is now becoming an adolescent.
