Toy Story 3 is top of the animated pops

Toy Story 3 has become the worldwide highest grossing animated film, beating Shrek 2 and taking over $920m (£590m) at box offices around the globe

Disney's latest creation from the Toy Story trilogy has beaten Shrek 2 to become the biggest grossing animated film at the box office globally, people with an Empire subscription may be interested to learn.

Since the third movie hit screens, Andy and his toys have notched up over $920 million (£590 million) at the box office sales worldwide.

The film, which received much hype before its release, is close to securing $1 billion (£642 million) to become part of an exclusive club of movies.

According to Empire magazine, Toy Story 3, which audiences can enjoy in 3D at selected cinemas, is only the second Disney film to surpass the $400 million (£256.8 million), the other being the most recent of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Dead Man's Chest.

Despite knocking Shrek 2 off the top spot worldwide, Toy Story 3 still has some work to do to beat its rival in the US charts. To defeat Shrek 2 and claim residence in the top five US box office hits, Toy Story 3 would have to take a further $43 million (£27.5 million) at American box offices.
