Total Film looks at The Box

Richard Kelly's third movie The Box hit cinema screens last week and Total Film has given those who have not yet seen it an idea of what to expect.

Total Film magazine subscription holders will this month be able to get opinions on a number of movie releases, including the cinema version of The Box.

According to the magazine, the movie is a "tense, unnerving and jumpy thriller" worthy of three stars out of five.

It draws comparisons to Donnie Darko - which was also directed by Richard Kelly - and said that the film is the director's "most straightforward".

Starring Cameron Diaz, the movie presents the protagonist with a moral dilemma - solve all of her financial troubles by pressing a button that will kill a stranger somewhere in the world.

Drawing comparisons to The Twilight Zone and ET and Kelly's previous works, the magazine criticises the ending, suggesting that the story loses its way of sorts in the final half hour.

However, it calls it "a return to form" for Kelly, noting that Diaz's performance is her best since Being John Malkovich.

Diaz has also starred in movies such as Something About Mary, the Shrek series and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.
