Top Gear presenter James May says the show's 'like a sitcom'

Radio Times magazine subscription holders can read how Top Gear presenter James May believes the show is now 'like a sitcom'.

Fans of Top Gear who have a Radio Times magazine subscription can read how presenter James May believes the show is no longer about cars and is more like a sitcom.

The 47-year-old, who has been a presenter on the show since 1999, said he and his co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond play "characters" on the BBC2 programme.

He told Radio Times magazine: "It's really almost a sitcom now, so we are characters ... When I started, Top Gear was a car show about cars, and I was interested in the technology but also the sociology and the artistry of them ... the shapes and the colours.

"That was something I've always been into. But it's a different programme now, it's turned into something else."

He added that they do all care about cars and this is occasionally expressed on the show.

"Ultimately we do know what we're talking about and we do let that be known occasionally. Very subtly, every now and then, you think, 'Oh, actually, they do love their subject and they do know a bit about it'," the presenter said.
