NME magazine reveals London punk venue under threat of closure

2306: Music fans with an NME magazine subscription can read all about a London punk venue which is currently facing the threat of closure due to the rental prices at the club going up.

Punk rock fans with an NME magazine subscription may be disappointed to read the latest news about London's 100 Club.

The owners of the venue have admitted it is facing the threat of closure after rental costs have soared.

Performers at the well-known venue have included the likes of David Bowie, Queens of the Stone Age, Bob Dylan and Oasis over the years, reports NME magazine.

The basement venue on London's Oxford Street could be closed in the next few months due to increasing overhead costs.

Some of the most defining moments in British punk rock history took place at the club, including a special two-day festival featuring the legendary Sex Pistols and The Clash, in 1976.

However, now, owner Jeff Horton claims he has been hit by a rental cost of £166,000 a year - a 45 per cent rise.

He said that, if an investor isn't found, the club will close by Christmas.

The 100 Club has been promoting live music on its premises since 1942, when jazzman Jimmy Skidmore played on the opening night.
