Young people 'suffering most due to public sector cuts'

If you've got a Management Today magazine subscription, you can read how the youth are suffering due to public sector cuts.

Management Today magazine subscription holders can read how it is young people who are suffering due to the cuts in the public sector, according to one writer.

Emma Haslett, writing for Management Today magazine, said figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which show 32,000 16 to 24-year-olds lost their jobs in the three months to November illustrate the effect of the downturn.

There are now 951,000 unemployed young people in the UK - putting it at the highest level since 1992.

This means, according to the data, the jobless rate is 20.3 per cent among young people, compared to 7.9 per cent across the rest of the population.

Ms Haslett writes for Management Today magazine: "While these figures show that the impact of the public spending cuts (as well as tax hikes and bad retail conditions) on private businesses has begun to be felt, this data doesn't include the latest figures on job losses in the public sector itself – so we still don't know the full extent of the damage."

Commenting on the latest ONS figures, the Institute for Public Policy Research said while a double-dip recession is now unlikely to happen, the risk of an employment double-dip is still there.
